How to Download Pinterest Videos and Images in Full Quality
Published · Extino Team

Short answer: Pinterest lets you download most images from the "…" menu on a pin. Videos are harder. Pinterest's own video download only works on full-screen video pins, only when the creator has switched it on, and the file comes with a watermark. For everything else, people paste the pin link into a downloader website, one pin at a time. A third option is a Chrome extension such as PinAuto, which puts a download button on every image and video pin, saves in full quality with no watermark, bulk-downloads images, and shows each pin's saves, likes, reactions and comments. Whatever you use, only repost pins you made or have permission to use.

What Pinterest lets you download on its own
Images
Pinterest has a built-in option for images:
- Open the pin.
- Click the … (ellipsis) icon next to the image.
- Select Download image.
On Android and iPhone the steps are the same. The image goes to your gallery or Photos. You can also reach the option from your home feed, from the … at the bottom-right of a pin.
Pinterest also says that "not all Pins can be downloaded", so the option won't appear on every pin.
Videos
Video is where it gets awkward. Pinterest added video downloading in 2022, but with limits:
| Pinterest's own video download | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Full-screen video pins only | Many video pins don't qualify at all |
| The creator must turn it on | The setting is "turned off by default" |
| Watermarked | The file shows the creator's name and username, and "the watermark can't be removed" |
| "Download image" on a video pin | Usually saves only a still or the cover, not the video |
So if you don't see a video download option, the creator probably hasn't enabled it, or the pin isn't a full-screen video.
Why can't I download my own Pinterest video?
The same rules apply to your own pins. If you want your own video back without the watermark, the cleanest source is your original file. If you've lost it, you'll need another method (see below).
Three ways to download Pinterest videos and images
Option 1: Pinterest's built-in download (free)
Use Download image for images, and the download option on full-screen video pins where the creator allows it.
- Good for: the odd image, or a video from a creator who has turned downloads on.
- Downsides: most videos can't be downloaded this way, and the ones that can are watermarked.
Option 2: A downloader website (free, with ads)
Copy the pin link, paste it into a downloader site, and download the file.
- Good for: a single video, once in a while.
- Downsides: it's one pin at a time, most sites are heavy with ads and pop-ups, quality varies, and you're handing your browsing to a site you know nothing about. It's the "seven tabs for one video" problem.
Option 3: Use PinAuto to download from the pin itself
PinAuto is a Chrome extension from Extino for Pinterest research. It adds a download button on top of every image and video pin, so one click saves the file in full quality with no watermark. You can also bulk-download images from the pins you've collected.
It also shows saves, likes, reactions and comments on every pin as you browse, which Pinterest doesn't show on other people's pins.
- Good for: creators and managers who repost their own pins to Reels, Shorts and TikTok, and researchers building a swipe file.
- Downsides, honestly: it's a paid tool after a 24-hour free trial (plans from £2.99 a month). It runs in Chrome on desktop. It's an independent tool, not made or approved by Pinterest. It has no public reviews yet. And downloading without a watermark doesn't change who owns the pin.
Comparison

The copyright rule that matters more than the tool
Downloading a file isn't the same as having the right to use it.
- Repost only your own pins, or pins you have written permission to use.
- Keep everyone else's as reference, in a private swipe file, to study what works. Then make your own version.
- Don't strip credit. Pinterest's own download adds a watermark for a reason: creators want credit.
- Reposting other people's content can get your account reported and your content removed.
Pinterest's terms also say you may not "scrape, collect, search, copy or otherwise access data or content from Pinterest in unauthorized ways, such as by using automated means (without our express prior permission)". Read them, and decide how much automation you're comfortable with.
How to download pins with PinAuto, step by step
- Install PinAuto from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to your toolbar.
- Open Pinterest in Chrome and log in as usual.
- Hover over a pin. A download button appears on top of the image or video.
- Click it. The file saves to your Downloads folder in full quality.
- For a batch, collect pins as you browse (or click Force Scrape to capture everything on screen), open View History, and choose Download Images.
- Check the file full screen before you repost it.
Before you download: which pins are worth saving?
This is the step most people skip. Pinterest stopped showing save counts on other people's pins in 2017. Pinterest's reason at the time was: "We removed Pin count because we want to provide people with the most helpful Pins." So in a search, a pin that flopped looks just like one that won.
Here's how to pick better, for free:
- Start with your own winners. In Pinterest Analytics, go to Top Pins and switch the filter from impressions to saves or outbound clicks. Those are the pins worth reposting to Reels and Shorts first.
- Look for repeats in your niche. Pins that keep showing up across different searches, week after week, are usually doing well.
- Check the date. An old pin with lots of activity tells you what worked. A new one tells you what's working now.
PinAuto speeds this up. It shows saves, likes, reactions and comments on every pin, collects the pins you browse into a sortable history, and exports them to CSV with the description, board, pinners, dates and links. Sort by saves, and you know which pins deserve a place in your swipe file.
Tips for reposting your own pins on Reels and Shorts
- Keep the original file. It's always better than any download.
- Check the ratio. Full-screen 9:16 pins drop straight into Reels, Shorts and TikTok.
- Add a fresh first second. A new hook or caption on screen helps the repost feel native.
- Link back. Put your Pinterest profile or the pin's link in the caption where the platform allows.
Frequently asked questions
Can you download videos from Pinterest? Sometimes. Pinterest lets you download full-screen video pins only if the creator has switched downloads on, and the file is watermarked. Otherwise you need a downloader website or an extension such as PinAuto.
Why can't I download a Pinterest video? Usually because the creator hasn't enabled downloads (the setting is off by default), or the pin isn't a full-screen video. "Download image" on a video pin normally saves only the cover.
Does Pinterest add a watermark to downloaded videos? Yes. Pinterest's own video download shows the creator's name and username, and Pinterest says the watermark can't be removed.
Can I download Pinterest images in bulk? Not with Pinterest's own tools. PinAuto can bulk-download images from the pins you collect.
Is it legal to download Pinterest videos? Downloading for private reference is common. Reposting someone else's video without permission can break copyright and Pinterest's rules. Repost only your own pins or pins you have permission to use.
How can I see how many saves a Pinterest pin has? For your own pins, use Pinterest Analytics. For other people's pins, Pinterest doesn't show save counts. PinAuto shows saves, likes, reactions and comments on every pin as you browse.
Does PinAuto work without a Pinterest business account? PinAuto runs in your browser while you use Pinterest, so it doesn't use Pinterest Analytics.
Is PinAuto free? It has a 24-hour free trial. After that, plans start at £2.99 a month, with yearly and lifetime options.
Try it on your own pins. If you repost your pins every week, PinAuto on the Chrome Web Store has a 24-hour free trial, so test the download button and the save counts on your own account first. And if you only need the odd image, Pinterest's built-in Download image is all you need.
