How to Run Multiple Prompts in ChatGPT Automatically (Without the API)

ChatGPT AutomationGuide
A drained Filipina woman in her mid-thirties rests her cheek flat on a desk, eyes rolled up toward a laptop that shows only a soft glow, beside a notepad covered in rows of pencil tally marks and a pencil worn to a stub, in front of a white grid wall with a giant mint question mark. Headline inside the question mark: ”Marketers: Waiting on reply #37?” Support line: ”Paste, wait, copy, rerun. Two hours gone.”

Short answer: ChatGPT has no built-in "run this list" button. You have four options: paste the whole list into one message (fast, but answers get thin), run each prompt by hand in a new chat (reliable, but slow), use the OpenAI API (automatic, but it needs keys, code and separate billing), or use a Chrome extension such as ChatGPT Automation, which takes a .txt file with one prompt per line and runs each one inside your own ChatGPT account. Whatever you choose, your plan's limits still apply, and image generation has its own limit, separate from text chats.

Why not just paste all the prompts at once?

It's the first thing everyone tries, and it works for five short prompts. For 30 or 100, it breaks down in three ways:

  • Answers get thinner. One user on OpenAI's developer forum found that sending 30 prompts at once gave limited detail for each, while sending them one by one gave the detail they needed.
  • The chat drifts. In a very long conversation, earlier answers start shaping later ones. A forum helper's advice for a long list of books was to "start a new chat for each book".
  • Images don't batch well. ChatGPT treats a request for many images as one conversation, and it's hard to match each image to the prompt that made it.

So the reliable pattern is one prompt, one complete answer, repeated for every line.

Write prompts that work in a batch

Before you pick a method, fix the prompts. A batch only works if every line stands on its own.

  1. Put the full brief in every line. Length, tone, format and rules. Never write "same as before", because in a batch there may be no "before".
  2. Only swap the variables. Keep a template and change the parts in brackets.
  3. One line, one prompt. No line breaks inside a prompt, so a .txt file keeps each one separate.
  4. Spot-check every tenth answer. If number 10 is off, fix the template before you run 200.

Example template for product descriptions:

Write a 120-word product description for [product], made of [material], for [buyer]. Warm, plain tone, three short paragraphs, no emojis, end with care instructions.

Build 200 lines in a spreadsheet. Put products in column A, materials in B and buyers in C. In D2, paste this and drag it down:

="Write a 120-word product description for "&A2&", made of "&B2&", for "&C2&". Warm, plain tone, three short paragraphs, no emojis, end with care instructions."

Copy column D into a plain .txt file, one prompt per line. That file works for every method below.

ChatGPT limits you'll hit in a batch

Text chats on Free"Unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards"
Images, files, voice and tools"Separate usage limits". ChatGPT tells you when you reach one
Image creation by planFree: "Limited image creation". Go: "More image creation". Plus: "More complex and accurate image creation". Pro: "Unlimited and faster image creation"

How many images can ChatGPT make per day?

OpenAI doesn't publish a fixed number for any plan. The Free plan has limited image creation, and paid plans get more. If a big image batch matters to you, test your own account with a small run first, and spread large jobs across days on smaller plans.

Four ways to run a list of prompts

Option 1: Paste the whole list into one message (free)

  • Good for: five to ten short, related prompts.
  • Downsides: thin answers, drift, and hard-to-separate output past about ten.

Option 2: Run each prompt in a new chat by hand (free)

  • Good for: up to 20 prompts where you want to read each answer as it arrives.
  • Downsides: paste, wait, copy, paste the next. A list of 100 takes a couple of hours, and you have to save every image yourself.

Option 3: Use the OpenAI API (pay per use)

  • Good for: developers and teams who already write code, and very large jobs. OpenAI's Batch API is built for big jobs that don't need an instant answer.
  • Downsides: you need an API key, some code, and a separate pay-per-use bill on top of any ChatGPT plan. Features in the ChatGPT app don't always match what's in the API.

Option 4: Use ChatGPT Automation (paid, from £1.99 a month)

ChatGPT Automation is a Chrome extension from Extino. You upload a .txt file with one prompt per line, and a side panel types each prompt into ChatGPT, waits for the reply to finish, and moves to the next. It has three modes: text-to-text, text-to-image and image-to-image. Images download automatically with filenames taken from the prompt, and a prompt that fails is flagged while the rest of the queue keeps going.

  • Good for: content marketers, SEO writers, online sellers and agencies who run long prompt lists every week, and AI artists making image sets.
  • Downsides, honestly: it runs inside your own ChatGPT session, so your plan's limits still apply and it can't raise them. It's new, with no store reviews yet. It only runs in Chrome. The store listing says it handles personal, payment and sign-in information, so read that section before you install. And OpenAI's terms restrict automated use (see below).

How to use ChatGPT Automation, step by step

  1. Install ChatGPT Automation from the Chrome Web Store. ⚠ Use the direct link below, because another developer's extension has almost the same name.
  2. Open chatgpt.com in the same Chrome browser and sign in to your own account.
  3. Open the side panel from the extension icon.
  4. Pick a mode: Text-to-Text, Text-to-Image or Image-to-Image.
  5. Upload your .txt file, one prompt per line. For Image-to-Image, drop your reference images into the dropzone too.
  6. Set the options you need: the delay between prompts, how many outputs, and how many run at once. A longer delay is gentler on your account.
  7. Press Start. The panel shows running, pending, done and failed jobs. Each file you upload becomes its own job, so you can stack several.
  8. Collect the results. Images download into the folder you choose, named after their prompts.

Is it allowed to automate ChatGPT?

We'd rather you hear this from us. OpenAI's Terms of Use list things you may not do, and one of them is: "Automatically or programmatically extract data or Output." Any tool that automates the ChatGPT website, ours included, carries that risk.

What we can tell you about ChatGPT Automation:

  • It runs in your own browser and your own ChatGPT session, doing the steps you'd do by hand.
  • It doesn't get around your plan's limits, and we don't claim it does.
  • We never promise that automation is "safe" or "undetectable". If you need a fully sanctioned route, the OpenAI API is the official way to run prompts programmatically.

So use a sensible delay, stay within your plan, and read OpenAI's terms before you run large batches. ChatGPT Automation is an independent tool and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT run multiple prompts at once? Not as a built-in feature. You can paste several prompts into one message, but answers get thinner past a handful. For long lists, run one prompt per chat, use the OpenAI API, or use an extension like ChatGPT Automation.

How do I send a list of prompts to ChatGPT? Put one prompt per line in a .txt file. Then either paste them one by one, send them through the OpenAI API, or upload the file to ChatGPT Automation, which runs each line in your own ChatGPT session.

Do I need the API to batch ChatGPT prompts? No. The API is one option. A browser extension can run a prompt list inside the ChatGPT account you already have, with no API key, although your plan's limits still apply.

How many images can ChatGPT make per day? OpenAI doesn't publish a fixed number. The Free plan has limited image creation, paid plans get more, and image limits are separate from text chats. ChatGPT tells you when you reach a limit.

Does ChatGPT Automation need ChatGPT Plus? It works inside your existing ChatGPT plan. What you can generate, especially images, depends on that plan's limits.

Where do ChatGPT Automation's images go? Into a folder you set, with filenames built from each prompt, so a long run comes back organised.

What happens if one prompt fails? It's marked as failed with its error, and the queue moves on to the next prompt. You can retry, remove or clear jobs afterwards.

Is it against OpenAI's terms to automate ChatGPT? OpenAI's Terms of Use say users may not automatically or programmatically extract data or output, so automating the ChatGPT website carries risk. The OpenAI API is the official route for programmatic use.

Try it on your next list. If you run long prompt lists every week, ChatGPT Automation on the Chrome Web Store runs a .txt file in your own ChatGPT session and saves every image with a useful name. It's £1.99 a month or £29.99 once. And if your list is ten prompts long, the free one-by-one method above is all you need.
